Appme

Threat Level – High

App me is another messaging application in the growing list of messaging services. Appme is similar to several other messaging apps being able to send and receive text messages. Appme is not a SMS texting application but a instant messaging app. They call it indtant messaging due to being able to only send messages inside the app, and not to outside phone numbers.

Appme allows person to person messaging and also group messaging. You can also view where your friends are utilizing the GPS feature of the app. This also can be used cross platforms from IOS to android.

App me does have a little more social networking side than other texting apps. It allows the user to setup a profile with a picture and to also make status updates that is viewable by friends.

Overall security settings are similar to any texting or instant messaging app. You can only message inside the app, so be sure to monitor the friends list if your child has appme loaded on their phone.

With this app incorporating the GPS feature and being able to see where your friends are, I bumped up from the usual moderate threat level of texting apps to a high threat level.

Meetme

Threat Level – Very High

MeetMe (formerly MyYearbook) is a social networking service founded in 2005 and marketed by Insider Guides inc. This app provides the opportunity to interact and meet new people that are around you.

This app is free to download with over 40 million users. This is another gps enabled social media site. It uses your devices internal gps to locate other meet me users that are in close proximity to you

This app has been featured on several major media outlets as a fast rising social media app.

Inside the app there is also a feature called ask me. This is where the app developers encourage you to ask any question and to allow users to answer back. Yes complete strangers.

Another internal feature is a section of the app called Photoboard. This allows you to see what people around you are uploading (photo uploads)

You create a profile with the ability to personalize your meet me account to you.

In the app description, the app states their is sexual content, intensive mature themes, alcohol, drug use and references. Also mild profanity and crude humor

That last paragraph should just add to the fact your kids would be interacting with nearby strangers, and asking them questions should be enough to delete immediately and not let your children around it. I gave this app a very high threat level.

Grindr

GrindR

Threat Level – High

Grindr is a geosocial networking application geared towards gay, bisexual, and bi-curious men. It runs on iOS, Blackberry OS and Android devices. Available for download from the Apple App Store and Google Play, Grindr comes in both free and subscription-based versions (Grindr Xtra).

The app makes use of the device geolocation, which allows users to locate other men within close proximity.

This is accomplished through a user interface that displays a grid of representative pictures of men, arranged from nearest to farthest away.

Tapping on a picture will display a brief profile for that user, as well as the option to chat, send pictures, and share one’s location.

You can understand the high threat level rating on this app. Any app that promotes homosexuality, sharing locations, chat and finding out who is close to you that uses this app is terrifying for children. It has the 18 and older tag, but the verification is a click away.

If you find this app on your child’s phone then delete it quick. This app is not for children
